For over a century, educators have raised concerns about the academic impact of summer break. Research consistently shows that students’ test scores tend to flatten or decline during the summer months, especially in math. However, recent studies suggest that the effects of summer learning loss may vary widely depending on the student, grade level, and type of assessment used.
While the extent of learning loss continues to be debated, one thing is clear: intentional summer learning opportunities can make a difference. High-quality programs that combine structured academic time with engaging enrichment activities that run for at least five weeks with consistent attendance are most effective in supporting student progress.
